FIRST TO KNOCK Quarterly Periodical

For the First to Knock periodical, I created a direction and template for the year. These are quick and (mildly) dirty affairs—I lay these out, typeset, and design things like titles and article graphics all in a day’s work. I like working on these because I get to work quickly without too much time to second guess my gut.

This one came together sketching an “abyss” and how something might rise out of said abyss. I can’t remember exactly where my head was at when I made this static image but I did go through a big phase of staring at opening title sequences in movies, especially things like the simple reveal in the Blow-Out (1980) title.

ABOUT
I’m a designer with a background in photography, publishing, and librarianship.

Most recently, I was an in-house Designer at Harvard Innovation Labs. Freelance clients include Hindman Auctions (Freeman’s | Hindman), Pillar VC, First to Knock, Jay Youngdahl, and more.

Before my career in design I was an academic librarian at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

In my spare time I maintain a personal art practice that is based in photography. Since 2017, I have published and edited Challenger, a BMX magazine that takes multiple forms. Its current form is a monthly subscriber only newsletter.
